Park Brake Control Module
Operates an electric park brake — two motors on the rear calipers in place of a lever and cable — and reports whether the brake is applied.
That single reported value has consequences in both directions, which is what makes its faults serious.
Reported applied when it is not means a vehicle that may roll when parked with the dashboard saying otherwise — and the driver has no independent way to check. There is no lever position to see and no cable tension to feel, which is exactly the reassurance lost when the mechanism became electric. The remedy is to use the transmission's park position and turn the wheels into the kerb on a slope.
Reported released when it is not means driving with the rear brakes partly clamped, which generates heat quickly — overheated pads and discs, and on a long enough journey a genuine fire risk. A smell of hot brakes, a sense of dragging, or hot rear wheels after a journey means stopping.
The caliper motors fail more often than the module: mounted at the rear calipers under the vehicle, in road spray and salt, on short harnesses that flex with suspension movement. And these systems must be put into service mode before rear pads are changed — one not reset correctly afterwards produces exactly this, so a fault right after rear brake work is that until shown otherwise.
