Electric Power Steering Motor
Adds force to what the driver applies at the wheel, on the column or built into the rack. It replaces a belt-driven hydraulic pump, which is why assistance can now be varied with road speed and why it can disappear instantly rather than fading — there is no reservoir and no hydraulic inertia. The steering itself stays mechanically connected throughout, so a failure makes the car heavy rather than unsteerable, and much heavier when parking than when moving. Draws hundreds of amps in bursts at full lock, which makes it unusually sensitive to a weak battery or a corroded earth — a much cheaper finding than the rack it is often built into.
