Also known as: b47d20, 2.0d, 118d engine, 320d engine, modular diesel

The four-cylinder diesel of BMW's modular family — 500 cc per cylinder, shared architecture with the B37 three and B57 six — and the N47's replacement across the volume range.

The reason to know it is not the same engine as the N47 is the timing chain. The N47's rear-mounted chain and its expensive failure are the first thing anybody says about a BMW four-cylinder diesel, and the B47 was substantially revised in exactly that area. The reputation transfers; the fault largely does not. Establish which engine is fitted before quoting a chain job.

What it does carry is the modern emissions stack — EGR, particulate filter and AdBlue on most markets — and the EGR module on early B47s was subject to recall for a cracking and overheating risk. Check open campaigns against the VIN. Beyond that, its faults are the diesel duty-cycle faults every engine here shares: filters that cannot regenerate on short journeys, and the cascade of codes that follows.

Cars fitted with this engine

26 generations, across 2 makes. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
