The Hyundai Motor Group's small petrol four, in 1.4 and 1.6 litre forms, and the most widely fitted engine across Hyundai and Kia — the i30, Elantra, Accent, Cee'd, Rio, Soul and Sportage have all carried one. Both port-injected (MPI) and direct-injected (GDI) versions exist under the same family name, and the distinction matters more than the badge does.

On the GDI members, intake-valve carbon is the recurring complaint, because there is no port injection washing the valve, and it presents as a rough cold idle and misfire codes on a car with a clean service history. The MPI versions do not do this at all.

The second theme is the timing chain and its tensioner at higher mileage — a rattle on start-up that precedes any code — and, on some markets and build ranges, oil consumption. These engines are also common in markets with variable fuel quality, where knock-related codes are worth reading as fuel before as sensor.

27 generations, across 2 makes. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
