Do not leave the vehicle unattended until this is fixed. Selecting P may not actually be parking the car, and it can roll away — this is a genuine safety fault rather than an inconvenience.
Always apply the parking brake, and leave it applied. If the car has an automatic hold or electric parking brake, make sure it is engaged before you get out. On a slope, chock a wheel if you have anything to hand.
This is worth knowing regardless of the fault: apply the parking brake BEFORE selecting park, every time. Otherwise the whole weight of the car rests on a small metal pawl inside the gearbox — that is the clunk you hear coming out of park on a hill, and it is a common cause of exactly this problem.
Have it recovered rather than driven if you cannot secure it when parked.

The transmission cannot engage park when asked to.
This is a rollaway code, and that is how it should be read. On a shift-by-wire transmission there is no mechanical link between the selector and the parking pawl — the lever is a switch, and an actuator engages park on the module's instruction. When that fails, selecting P does not park the car.
Many vehicles apply the electric parking brake as a fallback and warn the driver. Not all do, and the fallback can fail too. Never rely on it.
Before assuming a fault, several deliberate conditions prevent park engaging, and knowing them avoids a wasted visit:
- The vehicle must be stationary. Park is inhibited above walking pace to protect the pawl.
- The module must agree on the selected range. A range sensor disagreement blocks engagement rather than risking the wrong one.
And one mechanical cause is both common and preventable, which is the genuinely useful part. Parking on a slope and selecting P before applying the handbrake puts the entire weight of the car onto the parking pawl. A loaded pawl can be very difficult to engage or release — the familiar clunk when coming out of park on a hill is exactly that load letting go.
Apply the parking brake first, then select park. The brake then holds the car and the pawl carries nothing. It costs nothing and it prevents this and its sibling faults.
