P0949: Adaptief aanleren van de handmatige stand van de automaat niet voltooid
Wat te doen
If the gearbox has recently had work done — a new clutch, a replaced module, or even a disconnected battery — and now shifts badly, ask whether the adaptation procedure was run and completed before accepting that anything is wrong with the parts. It takes minutes with a scan tool plus a short drive, and it is a very common reason for a car to come back from a repair driving worse than it went in.
Wat deze code betekent
The transmission has not finished learning its adaptations. This code is not a fault at all in the ordinary sense — it is a statement that a required procedure has not been completed — and reading it as a fault is how people end up paying for parts that were never broken.
An automated gearbox does not come out of the factory knowing its own clutch. It learns: the exact point at which the clutch begins to bite, how long each actuator takes to travel, how much force a particular gear needs to engage. Those learned values are what make the difference between a gearbox that shifts smoothly and one that lurches, and they are specific to that individual clutch and that individual mechanism.
They are also erased. A battery disconnection, a module replacement, a clutch replacement, or a repair that involved unplugging the gearbox all clear them, and until they are relearned the transmission is working from generic defaults. The result is exactly what a worn-out gearbox feels like: harsh engagement, hesitation pulling away, poor low-speed changes.
That is the trap. A car comes back from having a clutch fitted, drives badly, and the obvious conclusion is that the new clutch is faulty or the work was done poorly. The actual answer is often that the adaptation was never run, or was started and not completed. The procedure is a scan tool operation followed by a specific drive cycle — usually a set number of engagements at particular speeds — and it takes minutes plus a short drive rather than parts.
Worth knowing that it can also fail to complete for a real reason: if the clutch is genuinely worn beyond the range the adaptation can cover, the procedure will not finish. So a relearn that repeatedly refuses to complete is itself diagnostic, and points where P0810 does.
