You may never have used the CD player, and this may still be worth fixing. Here is why.
The disc player is connected to the same network as the rest of the car. A module that has failed in a way that leaves it chattering can keep that network awake after you lock the car — and a car that never fully goes to sleep flattens its battery in a few days. So a device nobody uses can still leave you unable to start the car, which is the reason not to simply ignore it.
The free check first: is there a disc stuck in it? A jammed disc leaves the mechanism reporting a state the rest of the car cannot make sense of, and it is a common cause with no electrical fault at all.
If the changer is in the boot, look for water — a hardened rear light seal or an aged tailgate seal puts water right where it lives.
And if you genuinely never use it, ask whether it can simply be disconnected and the car told to stop expecting it. That is a legitimate answer — but it must be coded out properly rather than just unplugged, or the car complains about the missing module instead.

An optical disc player is legacy equipment on a modern vehicle, and being honest about that is the useful part of this page — along with the reason it still needs fixing.
Many vehicles built with a CD player or a boot-mounted changer have owners who have never used it. So a fault here is often discovered long after it occurred, during an unrelated diagnosis, with nobody able to say when it started.
The reason to deal with it anyway is that the player is on the same network as everything else. A module that has failed in a way that leaves it transmitting can occupy the bus, delay other traffic, or keep the network awake after the vehicle is locked — and the second of those flattens the battery over a few days. That is why a device nobody uses can still cost money, and it is the argument for fixing rather than ignoring it.
Where the module lives decides the cause, as with the amplifier at U0487. A boot-mounted changer sits in the side panel where water arrives through a rear light gasket or a tailgate seal, and where loads shift against it. A dash-mounted player fails mechanically — a disc jammed in the mechanism reports a state the head unit cannot resolve, which is a genuinely common version of this and needs no electronics at all.
So the free check is whether there is a disc stuck in it, and the honest option, where the vehicle allows it, is that disconnecting a redundant player is a legitimate outcome — provided it is done properly and the vehicle is coded to stop expecting it, rather than simply unplugged.
