An indicator fault in the restraint system is not a cosmetic problem, and the reason is that the lamp is the only way the system can tell anyone anything.
A restraint system gives no feedback in normal use. It cannot be tested by the driver, it does nothing perceptible until the one moment it matters, and by then it is too late to discover it was switched off. The warning lamp is the entire user interface.
Which is why the module monitors its own indicators. A lamp that cannot illuminate would leave a disabled restraint system looking exactly like a working one — so the failure of the warning is treated as seriously as the failure it would have warned about.
It is also why these lamps self-test at every start. The bulb check that lights the airbag lamp for a few seconds is not decoration: it proves the lamp works. A car whose airbag lamp never comes on at all is more worrying than one where it stays on, and it is worth watching for on any used vehicle.
This is the lamp that tells you the passenger airbag is switched off, and it is the one indicator whose failure is actively dangerous rather than merely uninformative. A passenger airbag can be disabled deliberately — for a rear-facing child seat — and the only way anyone knows is this lamp. If it fails on, an adult may sit unprotected; if it fails off, a child seat may be fitted in front of a live airbag.
