Cell group A's sense circuit is returning a value that is electrically plausible and does not agree with the rest of the pack.
Range/Performance is the variant where the sense-line-or-cell question is hardest and matters most, because a believable wrong number is exactly what both faults produce. An open circuit announces itself; a group reading a quarter of a volt below its neighbours does not.
Two things separate them, and neither is the size of the number. How fast it moves — chemistry is slow, wiring is not. And whether it moves with the right things — a real group sags under load and recovers, tracks temperature, and drifts over months; a resistive tap tracks current only, and a damaged one tracks the road surface.
