The terrain modes will not work, and the important part is that the car looks and feels completely normal while being configured entirely for tarmac. Traction control will cut in early rather than letting the wheels spin as they need to in mud or sand, the gearbox will change up when it should hold a gear, and hill descent control may not be there when you want it.
A driver who selects a mode, sees nothing happen, and carries on is relying on settings the car has not applied — which is exactly the situation to avoid on a slope or in soft ground.
If other warnings are on too — four-wheel drive, differentials, suspension — those are probably the real fault. This system does not do anything itself; it tells the others what to do. So when one of them is unhappy, terrain mode stops working as a consequence, and fixing that one thing restores it.

This is the terrain-mode system — the dial or menu offering settings for mud, sand, snow, rock or gravel — and what it actually does is worth understanding, because it explains why losing it removes more than a selector.
It is a coordinator rather than a mechanism. Choosing a terrain mode does not operate anything by itself; it tells several other systems to change their behaviour at once — throttle response, gearbox shift points, the transfer case or coupling, the differentials, traction control thresholds, hill descent control and sometimes ride height. The module publishes the selected mode, and everything else acts on it.
So an implausible mode report is rejected by all of them, and the vehicle reverts to its standard on-road configuration.
That is the practical content of this page, and it is a genuine safety point on a capable vehicle. The car looks and feels normal, and it is now configured for tarmac. A fault in the transfer case at U0403, the couplings at U0414, the differentials at U0436 and U0437, or the suspension at U0421 makes terrain mode unavailable as a consequence — so this code alongside any of those is downstream, and the work belongs upstream.
