Air conditioning blows warm

The system switches on and the fan works, but the air never gets cold — or it is cold for the first few minutes and then is not. This is a different fault from air conditioning that never engages at all, because the compressor is running: the refrigerant is what is missing. Air conditioning is a sealed system that should never need topping up, so a car needing gas has a leak by definition, and the useful question is where rather than how much. Cold at first and warm later usually means the system is icing up internally rather than running out.

A recharge without a leak search buys a summer at best, and the refrigerant carries the compressor's oil, so a system that has run low has also been running short of lubrication.

Cold at first and warm later usually means the system is icing up internally rather than running out. The evaporator drops below freezing, condensate on its fins turns to ice, and the ice blocks the airflow — so the air stops arriving rather than stopping being cold. The tell is that it recovers after the system is switched off for a while, which is the ice melting. That points at the evaporator temperature sensor or the control that should cycle the compressor to prevent it, not at refrigerant quantity.

Airflow faults imitate this convincingly. A blocked cabin filter, a failing blower or a blend flap stuck warm all deliver poor cooling with a perfectly healthy refrigerant circuit — and a blend flap is the one to suspect when the air is neither cold nor properly hot.

Also check the condenser. It sits in front of the radiator and collects everything the road throws at it; a blocked or damaged one cannot reject heat, so pressures rise and cooling fades exactly when it is needed most.

    The leak was never found — a recharge treats the level rather than the cause

    Gauge the pressures and search for the leak with dye or a detector, including the condenser and the compressor shaft seal.

    Repair the leak before recharging again. Running low also starves the compressor of oil.
