Fuel gauge reading incorrectly
The fuel gauge shows the wrong level — stuck at full or empty, jumping about, or sticking at one point on the dial. The sender is a float arm sweeping a resistive track, and the track wears where the float spends most of its life — the middle. So a tank that reads correctly full and correctly empty can still be wrong everywhere in between, and the fault is repeatable at one part of the sweep rather than random.
On many vehicles this also blocks emissions self-tests from running, since several monitors need a trusted fuel level before they will execute — so a car that cannot complete its readiness monitors, with a gauge that misbehaves, has one fault rather than two.
