Hissing or rushing air under acceleration

A hiss, rush or sucking sound that appears when you accelerate and stops when you lift off. On a turbocharged engine this is usually pressurised air escaping before it reaches the engine — a split hose, a loose clamp or a perished joint somewhere between the turbocharger and the inlet. It matters more than it sounds: the engine measures the air it expects to receive, so air lost after that measurement makes the mixture wrong, and the turbocharger works harder to reach a pressure it can never make. Distinct from a whistle, which is usually the turbocharger itself.

What this usually means

On a turbocharged engine this is usually pressurised air escaping before it reaches the engine — a split hose, a loose clamp or a perished joint somewhere between the turbocharger and the inlet.

It matters more than it sounds, and the reason is that the engine measures the air it expects to receive: air lost after that measurement makes the mixture wrong, and the turbocharger works harder to reach a pressure it can never make. So a noise that seems cosmetic is simultaneously a fuelling error and a load on the turbocharger.

Distinct from a whistle, which is usually the turbocharger itself — and that distinction is worth insisting on, because one is a hose and the other is a bearing.

A pressure test of the charge system finds it in minutes where listening finds it eventually: with the system sealed and pressurised to a few pounds, a leak is audible and can be soaped. That is the test to ask for, because charge pipes are routed where they cannot be seen and the split is often on the underside of a bend.

Boost data corroborates without any dismantling. Requested against actual boost, with a shortfall that grows as demand rises, is the signature of air escaping rather than air not being made.

On a naturally aspirated engine the same noise means the opposite: air being drawn in where it should not be — a split intake hose or a failed gasket downstream of the meter. That produces a lean mixture rather than a rich one, and it is found the same way, with smoke rather than pressure.
