Leaving the car overnight helps considerably. This kind of fault is found from stone cold, when every temperature sensor on the vehicle should agree with the others — a warm engine tells the garage much less.

Mention if the engine has been using oil, or if an oil change is overdue. Some vehicles calculate service intervals partly from oil temperature, so this fault can also distort the service indicator.

Ask for the connector and wiring to be checked before the sensor is replaced. Added resistance in the wiring shifts the reading in a way that looks exactly like a drifted sensor and is much cheaper to fix.

The car will usually drive normally, though on some engines it may hold back full power until it believes the oil is warm.

What this code means

The second engine oil temperature sensor is reporting a value that is electrically valid but does not fit the conditions.

Oil temperature is used for more than a gauge, which is why a drifted sensor matters more than it appears to. The module uses it to decide when variable valve timing may operate, since the phasers are driven by oil pressure and behave differently with cold, thick oil; when to allow full power, on engines that protect themselves until the oil is warm; and when the oil is due for a change on vehicles with a condition-based service indicator.

So a sensor reading falsely high can grant full power and full valve timing authority to an engine still running on cold oil — which is the consequence worth naming, because nothing warns the driver.

Range/performance is caught by the cold soak comparison, as with every temperature sensor. After the vehicle has stood overnight, oil, coolant and intake air should all read close to ambient and close to each other. The one that disagrees has identified itself.

A second oil temperature sensor implies a system that cares about oil at two points — commonly one in the sump and one in the gallery or cooler circuit. A genuine difference between them is not necessarily a fault, so confirm which sensor B is on this engine before assuming the two should read identically when running.

High resistance in the wiring is a frequent cause, and it shifts the reading consistently rather than erratically — which looks exactly like sensor drift until the connector is inspected.
