Worn camshaft phaser
The mechanism rotating the camshaft against its drive to vary valve timing. Worn phasers rattle briefly at startup before oil pressure builds, which is the cheapest diagnostic available and one an owner can report — and the wear is driven by oil condition, so the service history is evidence.
