Rattle from engine on startup
A brief metallic rattle in the first second or two after starting, then silence. Characteristically a timing chain tensioner or a camshaft phaser locking mechanism that has worn — and it usually precedes a stored code by a long way.

A brief metallic rattle in the first second or two after starting, then silence — and it is characteristically a timing chain tensioner or a camshaft phaser locking mechanism that has worn. The mechanism explains the timing precisely. A chain tensioner is held out by oil pressure and by a ratchet that should stop it retracting when the engine stops. When the ratchet wears, the tensioner collapses overnight, so the chain is slack for the fraction of a second before oil pressure arrives — and that slack chain slaps its guides. Once pressure builds, everything is quiet again.
A phaser does the same by a different route. Camshaft phasers have a locking pin that should hold them at a fixed position while stopped; a worn pin lets the phaser move against its stops until oil pressure fills it, which rattles for the same second or two.
Oil is a genuine factor rather than a excuse. Both mechanisms depend on prompt oil pressure, so the wrong grade, a long-overdue change, or a level that is low all lengthen the rattle — and correcting them sometimes reduces it markedly. That is worth doing first because it is cheap, but a rattle that persists on fresh correct oil is mechanical.
Do not dismiss it because it is brief. A chain that has stretched enough to rattle can jump a tooth, and on an interference engine that is a cylinder head rather than a chain kit. A rattle that has grown longer over months is the one to act on now.
