What to do
Ask where this sensor is fitted on your gearbox before agreeing to the work. On some transmissions it is external and quick; on others it is inside and the sump or valve body has to come off — the same fault code, very different bills, and it is a fair question to ask up front.
Ask for the connector to be checked first, including that it is plugged in. A sensor left disconnected after gearbox, clutch or sump work produces this exactly.
Expect higher revs at a steady cruise and worse fuel consumption. The torque converter lock-up is disabled without this signal, which is the vehicle protecting itself.
Ask for a re-scan after the repair, since this sensor is what detects slipping and a real gearbox fault can hide behind it.
What this code means
The input speed sensor's signal is above the highest voltage the circuit should produce.
High and open read identically to the module, so this is an open-circuit code until measurement at the connector proves otherwise — and on this sensor the open case is much the likelier.
The reason is where it lives. Many input speed sensors sit inside the transmission case, reading a toothed surface on the input shaft or the drum, with their wiring passing through a sealed pass-through connector in the case wall. That pass-through is a known weak point: it is subject to fluid, heat and the gearbox flexing, and a failed seal admits fluid to the outside connector while a failed contact opens the circuit.
On such a transmission, a sensor "replacement" may mean removing the pan or the valve body, which changes the job considerably. Ask where the sensor actually is before agreeing a price — the same code costs very different amounts on different gearboxes.
The trivial cause is still worth eliminating: a connector left unplugged after gearbox, clutch or sump work.
What the driver notices is lock-up related. Without input speed, torque converter lock-up cannot be controlled, so it is usually disabled — which shows as higher engine speed at a cruise and worse economy, and is protection rather than a further fault.
