Four Wheel Drive Switch
Selects between two- and four-wheel drive, and reports that selection to the transmission, the engine module and stability control. Its failure direction matters more than the failure: stuck in two-wheel drive costs traction and damages nothing, while a part-time system stuck in four-wheel drive on dry tarmac winds the driveline up against itself — there is no centre differential to absorb the difference in distance the axles travel through a corner, and on a grippy surface the tyres cannot slip to release it. The energy goes into the transfer case, propshafts and differentials instead.
