P2190: System Too Rich at Idle Bank 2

What to do

Expect a rough idle and a smell of fuel. If only this bank is rich, the shared explanations — cold running, fuel pressure, the purge valve — are ruled out, and the cause is on this side of the engine: an injector, or the oxygen sensor reading it.

What this code means

The rich-at-idle condition of P2188, on the second cylinder bank. The reasoning is unchanged and the temperature check named there — an engine that never warms up is commanded rich on purpose — applies equally.

One addition specific to a single bank being rich while the other is not: a cold engine or a faulty coolant temperature sensor affects both banks, and shared fuel pressure affects both banks. So a rich condition confined to one bank rules those out immediately and leaves the hardware belonging to that side — its injectors, and the sensor watching it.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
