Was zu tun ist
Get this looked at promptly, and do not attempt it yourself. An airbag fault usually means the whole restraint system has switched itself off, so the airbags and pretensioners may not fire in a crash — the car drives normally and is far less able to protect you. Never probe airbag wiring with a multimeter: the current an ordinary meter uses can set off the charge. This needs a workshop with the right equipment and the correct disable procedure.

The deployment loop for the collapsible steering column is faulty.
This is a pyrotechnic device that shortens the steering column in a crash, and most drivers have no idea their car has one.
The steering column is one of the few structures pointing directly at the driver's chest, and in a severe frontal impact the whole steering assembly is pushed rearward by the collapsing front of the car. A column that stays rigid delivers that intrusion straight into the airbag and the occupant behind it.
So the column is built to collapse — and on many vehicles the collapse is triggered rather than passive. A small charge releases a mechanism that lets the column telescope at a controlled rate, timed against the airbag inflating, so the bag has somewhere to go and the column moves away rather than through.
Which makes this loop as safety-critical as any airbag's, and it is one people are surprised to find in a fault list at all.
