Que faire
The car drives entirely normally — this is the audio amplifier, and it is worth knowing where it lives before anyone starts pulling the car apart.
It is almost always either under one of the front seats or behind a panel in the boot, and that tells you what to suspect.
If it is under a seat: look for anything spilt, anything pushed under there, and — this one matters — anything laid over it. A floor mat or a rug over an amplifier blocks the air it needs and makes it overheat.
If it is in the boot: look for water. A hardened rear light seal or an aged tailgate seal puts water exactly where that panel is.
One symptom is nearly always blamed on the wrong thing. If the sound cuts out when you turn the volume up and comes back later, that is the amplifier protecting itself — from heat or from a sagging power supply. New speakers will not fix it. Uncover the amplifier and see whether it behaves differently; that costs nothing.
If a stereo, amplifier or subwoofer has been fitted after the car was built, say so. A badly connected installation causes both audio faults and network complaints, and an amplifier that never switches off will flatten the battery over a few days.

An external amplifier is a separate module rather than part of the head unit, and where it is mounted determines almost everything about how it fails. The two usual homes are under a front seat and in a boot side panel, and each has a characteristic fault:
- Under a seat is where feet, luggage, spilt drinks and the vacuum cleaner go. It is also where seat rails move back and forth over the wiring, and where a floor mat or a rug laid over the unit blocks the airflow it depends on.
- In a boot side panel is where water arrives — through a hardened rear light gasket, an aged tailgate seal or a blocked drain — and where a heavy load shifting can strike it directly.
One complaint is worth naming because it is nearly always misdiagnosed as speakers: sound that cuts out when the volume goes up, and returns after a while. That is an amplifier protecting itself — from heat, because it is covered or its ventilation is blocked, or from a supply that sags under load. Replacing speakers does not fix it, and the free check is to uncover the amplifier and see whether the behaviour changes.
On a vehicle with an aftermarket installation, the causes shift. An added amplifier spliced into the original wiring, a power feed taken from the wrong place, or an earth made to painted metal produces both audio faults and network complaints — and an amplifier that never switches off is a well-known cause of a battery that goes flat over several days.
Nothing here affects how the vehicle drives.
