Wat te doen
Mention if the battery has been replaced recently, and whether it was registered or coded to the car. Many modern vehicles need a new battery registering with the engine module, and a battery changed without that step causes exactly this fault with a perfectly good alternator.
Ask for the drive belt and its tensioner to be checked, since a slipping belt stops the alternator delivering what it is asked for.
Expect the battery warning light and possibly several other warnings. A charging fault upsets modules across the car, so a page of unrelated warnings is normal here rather than a sign of multiple faults.
Do not put off a proper diagnosis — if charging genuinely is failing, the car will eventually stop and not restart.
Wat deze code betekent
The charging system is not performing the way the module expects.
On a modern vehicle the alternator is not a dumb device that charges whenever the engine runs. The engine module commands it — raising output when the battery needs it, reducing it under hard acceleration to free up engine power, and increasing it on the overrun to recover braking energy. This is regulated charging, and it is why the engine module has an opinion about it at all.
So this code is a performance judgement rather than a simple fault. The module asked for an output and did not get it.
Which means the alternator is only one of the candidates.
- The alternator or its regulator has failed, which is the obvious case.
- The command link has failed. These alternators are commanded over a communication line, and a fault there leaves the alternator running on its own default while the module concludes it is not obeying.
- The drive belt is slipping, so the alternator cannot reach commanded output whatever it is told.
- The battery is at fault. A battery that will not accept charge makes a healthy charging system look like it is failing.
Battery registration matters on vehicles with regulated charging. A replacement battery that was never registered leaves the module charging to the old battery's profile — and that alone sets this code with entirely sound hardware.
