C0071: 2/4 Wheel Drive Status Input
What to do
Check whether four-wheel drive engages and disengages properly. The brakes work normally, but ABS and traction control may be using the wrong strategy because the car is unsure which mode it is in. Worth having looked at along with the four-wheel-drive system itself.
What this code means
The two-wheel-drive / four-wheel-drive status input has a fault.
The braking system has to know which wheels are driven, because the same wheel behaviour means different things in each mode.
In four-wheel drive the wheels are mechanically tied together, so they cannot slip independently the way ABS and traction control assume. A system that does not know it is in four-wheel drive can misread normal driveline behaviour as wheel slip, and intervene when nothing is wrong.
It also changes what good braking looks like. Off-road ABS strategies deliberately allow more lock-up, because a locked wheel builds a wedge of gravel or sand in front of the tyre that stops the vehicle faster than a rolling one. A car that thinks it is on tarmac will not do that.

The usual causes are the switch or the selector, not the braking system: a range switch on the transfer case, its wiring, or a transfer case control module that has stopped reporting.
