P077D: Output Shaft Speed Sensor Circuit High
What to do
Ask for the connector and the harness that reaches it to be checked before the sensor is replaced. The gearbox moves on its mounts under acceleration, so a harness that has lost a clip pulls at the plug every time you pull away — and that is a common cause with a perfectly good sensor.
Say whether the fault came and went before becoming permanent, and whether it was worse under acceleration. That pattern points firmly at wiring rather than the sensor.
Mention any recent gearbox, clutch or sump work, since a sensor left unplugged produces this exactly.
Expect the gearbox to hold one gear. Without this signal it cannot work out what gear it is in, so it stops shifting deliberately rather than shifting blindly.
What this code means
The output shaft speed sensor's signal is above the highest voltage the circuit should produce.
High and open are indistinguishable from inside the module, because these inputs carry a pull-up the module sees whenever nothing is loading the circuit. The measurement that separates them is made at the connector with the sensor unplugged, and it takes a minute.
On this sensor the open case dominates, and there is a specific reason worth knowing. The connector is on the transmission and the harness runs beside a component that moves on its mounts. Engine and gearbox rock under torque, and a harness that has lost a clip or a support pulls at its connector every time the driver accelerates — until a terminal backs out or a wire breaks inside intact insulation.
That mechanism explains the history these faults usually have: intermittent first, worse under acceleration, then permanent. A driver who reports it playing up when pulling away is describing a harness under strain, not a failing element.
The trivial cause deserves eliminating first, as always: a sensor left unplugged after a gearbox service, a sump gasket, or clutch work. On a recently serviced vehicle that costs nothing to check.
Expect the gearbox to default to a fixed gear. Without output speed the module cannot compute a ratio, so it stops shifting rather than shift blindly — which is protection rather than a second fault.
