P077C: Output Shaft Speed Sensor Circuit Low
What to do
Ask for the connector to be checked for transmission fluid, not just corrosion. Fluid creeps along the wires into the plug and bridges the terminals — it is a common cause, and a new sensor fitted into a contaminated connector fails the same way.
Ask what the sensor looked like when it came out. A heavy coating of metal filings is normal in small amounts and a warning sign in large ones — it says something inside the gearbox is wearing, which matters far more than the sensor.
Expect the speedometer to misbehave and the gearbox to shift oddly or hold one gear. Both follow from this and are not separate faults.
Say when the transmission fluid was last changed.
What this code means
The output shaft speed sensor's signal is below the lowest voltage the circuit should produce.
This sensor matters more than its own function suggests, because so much is calculated from it. Gear ratio monitoring, torque converter lock-up, shift timing, the speedometer on many vehicles, and the correlation checks against wheel speed all depend on it. A fault here therefore sets codes that appear to be about other things.
A signal pinned low means a short to ground, an open signal wire, or a collapsed supply, and the three are separated at the connector with the sensor unplugged.
Transmission fluid is the location-specific cause and it deserves naming first. The sensor is mounted in the transmission case, so its wiring passes through or beside fluid — and fluid wicks along the wire strands into the connector, where it bridges terminals. The connector can look clean while the fault sits inside it, and a sensor replaced without addressing that meets the same contamination.
Swarf is the second location-specific cause and it is worth reading as a message. These are magnetic sensors inside a gearbox, so they collect the fine metal every transmission produces. A heavily bearded sensor is telling you about the gearbox rather than about itself.
Check the tone ring as well as the sensor. A chipped tooth produces a dropped count once per revolution — erratic rather than dead, and a different repair entirely.
