Expect an engine that takes a long time to warm up, runs cooler than usual, and gives poor heater output in cold weather. It is unlikely to overheat — the valve normally fails toward cooling, which is the safe direction.

The important thing to say, because it saves a wasted repair: this is not necessarily a thermostat. On engines with this valve, the module chooses the running temperature electrically, and "it never warms up" is at least as likely to be this valve or its wiring. Ask for this circuit to be checked before a thermostat is fitted.

Worth fixing rather than living with, even though nothing is at risk. A permanently cool engine uses noticeably more fuel, dilutes its oil with unburnt fuel over time, gives you a poor heater, and will not complete the emissions monitors — so it can fail a test while running perfectly well.

An open circuit in the control of the valve that decides whether coolant flows through the radiator or bypasses it.

This valve is what replaced the thermostat's job of choosing, and the change is more significant than it sounds.

A wax thermostat opens at one temperature, decided when it was manufactured, and nothing can persuade it otherwise. That is a compromise: an engine runs most efficiently and with least wear when hot, but a hot engine has less margin against detonation and less room to absorb heat when it is working hard. A single fixed opening temperature has to serve both cases and serves neither perfectly.

An electrically controlled bypass valve lets the module choose a target temperature by conditions — running the engine deliberately hot at light load, where efficiency and emissions benefit and nothing is stressed, and cooling it deliberately under heavy load, where knock margin and heat rejection matter more. Coolant temperature stops being a property of the engine and becomes a control variable.

The consequence for diagnosis is that the old rules of thumb no longer apply, and that is what this page is for. "It never warms up properly, so it needs a thermostat" was reliable for decades. On an engine with this valve, slow warm-up is at least as likely to be the valve stuck in its bypass-open position, or its circuit open so it defaults there. Fitting a thermostat to an engine whose temperature is controlled by something else is a real and common wasted repair.

With the circuit open the valve sits at its default, which is generally the fail-safe direction — flow through the radiator, so the engine cools rather than overheats. That is the safe choice and it is why this is moderate rather than severe: expect an engine that runs cool and warms slowly rather than one at risk.

A persistently cool engine is not harmless, though. It runs a richer mixture for longer, uses more fuel, produces more unburnt hydrocarbons, dilutes its oil with fuel, and leaves the cabin heater weak — and it will not pass an emissions monitor that requires operating temperature to run.
