If you are towing a braked trailer, stop somewhere safe. This system applies the trailer's brakes, and if it is not working the trailer is not helping to stop the combination — you will need far more distance, it will be harder to control in an emergency, and in most places it is not legal to tow a braked trailer without working brakes.
If you are not towing, this is a minor fault — deal with it before your next trip.
Two things to check first, and both are free.
Look at the trailer socket at the back of the vehicle. It sits at bumper height in the road spray and salt, often uncovered, and corroded pins are the commonest cause by a wide margin. Cleaning them frequently fixes it outright.
Check the gain or trailer setting on the controller. These are adjusted to suit the trailer, and one left at an extreme setting from a different load can produce readings the car will not accept.
If your towing electrics were fitted after you bought the car, start with whoever installed them.

This module applies the brakes on a towed trailer in proportion to the tow vehicle's own braking, and the reason it matters is straightforward physics: a trailer heavy enough to need brakes is heavy enough to push the tow vehicle if it does not have them.
So the safety statement has to be unambiguous. If the vehicle is towing a braked trailer and this system is not working, the trailer's brakes may not be applying — and the combination will take considerably longer to stop, will be harder to control in an emergency, and may be unlawful, since braked trailers above a certain weight are required to have working brakes in most jurisdictions.
The practical advice follows: do not tow until it is resolved, and if a trailer is attached now, stop somewhere safe and reassess rather than completing the journey.
Not towing makes this a minor fault, which is worth saying so nobody panics about an empty towbar.
Two ordinary explanations account for most of these and neither is a vehicle fault.
The trailer connector. It lives at the rear of the vehicle at bumper height, exposed to road spray, salt and physical damage, and it spends much of its life uncovered or plugged into something wet. Corroded pins there are the single commonest cause, and cleaning them is often the whole repair.
And the gain setting. These controllers are adjusted to the trailer being towed, and a setting left at the extreme from a different trailer produces readings the vehicle rejects. Worth checking before anything is replaced.
Aftermarket towing electrics apply the U0248 warning in full — a badly installed kit spliced into the vehicle's circuits is a leading cause of trouble at the back of any vehicle.
