The car drives normally. A powered tailgate may refuse to open, stop half-way, or reverse itself — which is usually the obstruction protection reacting to data it does not trust, not the motor failing.
Check the boot carpet for damp and mention it if you find any. The lower corners of a tailgate rust and the seal channel fills with leaves, and water reaching the module in there is a common cause of exactly this.
If several things at the back have stopped together — the wiper, the number plate lights, the camera, the release — say so. They share one flexing loom at the top of the tailgate, and a break there explains all of them at once.
Be careful with a tailgate that stops half-way. It is heavy, it is above head height, and gas struts weaken with age. Do not force it.

A powered tailgate is a door with all of the door problems and two of its own: it is the heaviest panel on the car, and it opens upward into things.
Its harness crosses the same flexing joint every door has, at the top of the tailgate where the concertina runs into the roof — and this one carries more: latch, motor, struts, lamps, wiper, camera, number plate lights and often the boot release. A break there is common and takes several unrelated functions with it, which is a useful signature.
Water collects here too. The tailgate seals against a lip that fills with leaf litter, and the lower corners of the gate rust and let water into the cavity where the module and its connectors sit. A tailgate code with damp boot carpet is one fault.
The powered mechanism adds obstruction sensing, so a gate that stops half-way or reverses is often the protection reacting to load data it cannot trust rather than a failed motor. Powered gates also lose their position learning after a battery disconnection or manual forcing, and re-initialisation is a handbook procedure.
A tailgate that stops half-open is heavy and above head height. Do not push it through the fault; get the mechanism checked, and be careful of gas struts, which fail with age and without warning.
