Wat te doen
Check the fuel filler cap first — it is the commonest cause by a wide margin. Take it off, look at the rubber seal for cracks or hardening, and refit it until it clicks. Then drive normally for a few days and see whether the light goes out. A large share of these clear at no cost.
If the cap has been replaced with a non-original one, that is worth mentioning. They frequently do not seal properly.
Tell the garage if you can smell fuel, which suggests a genuinely large leak and changes the priority.
Ask for a smoke test if the cap is not the answer. It is the standard way of finding these and it locates the leak directly rather than by guesswork — worth asking for by name.
Wat deze code betekent
A large fuel vapour leak has been found, and the system has localised it to the fuel tank side.
The localisation is the valuable part of this code and it is worth knowing how the system does it. The evaporative system is a sealed volume running from the fuel tank through hoses to the charcoal canister and on to the engine. By closing valves that divide it, the module can test the halves separately — so it can say not merely that there is a leak but roughly where.
Fuel tank side narrows the search considerably: the tank itself, the filler neck, the filler cap, the tank sender seal, and the hoses between them.
Large means the leak is substantial, which in this context is a nominal one millimetre or more — not a pinhole. That changes the odds sharply:
- The filler cap is the single commonest cause — missing, loose, cross-threaded, the wrong non-original cap, or with a perished seal. Check it before anything else.
- The filler neck seal or a corroded neck, especially on older cars.
- A disconnected or split hose between tank and canister.
Start with the cap. Genuinely. Remove it, inspect the seal, refit it until it clicks, and drive a few cycles. A large share of these codes clear at no cost at all, and it is a fair thing to try before paying for a smoke test.
Expect a smell of fuel if the leak is genuinely large, and treat that as worth reporting.
