Wat te doen
Expect a long and alarming list of faults across several systems at once, and probably a dashboard covered in warnings.
That list is very likely one fault rather than many. This module is the hub for the car's body electronics, and on most vehicles it is also the bridge between the body systems and the engine systems — so when it publishes something the rest of the car cannot believe, everything downstream objects at once.
Two things worth telling whoever looks at it.
Has any water been in the car? These modules sit behind a kick panel, under the dashboard or beneath the footwell carpet — exactly where a leaking windscreen seal, a blocked drain or wet feet end up. A damp carpet on one side is the single most useful thing you can report.
Has this module been replaced or reprogrammed? It stores what equipment your particular car has, and one fitted without being configured to your vehicle will confidently report things that are not true. That is a coding job rather than another part.

The body control module is the hub of everything that is not the powertrain — lighting, locking, wipers, the alarm, interior electrics, and on many vehicles the switch inputs from the whole cabin. And on a great many vehicles it also acts as a gateway between the body network and the powertrain network.
That second role is what makes this code's effects so wide. A module that is both a participant and a bridge does not merely publish its own bad data — it is also in the path of everyone else's, so its faults can look like several networks failing at once.
The most useful diagnostic consequence follows from that: check whether the vehicle's other codes make a pattern. A long list of faults spanning body and powertrain, with this code among them, is very often this module alone. The list is the symptom, not the diagnosis.
A second thing worth knowing is that a body control module holds configuration rather than just software. It knows which options the vehicle has — which lights, which locks, which switches exist — and a module replaced or reprogrammed without being configured to this specific vehicle will publish data that does not match reality. The corpus records the same trap for engine and transmission modules; it is more common here because body modules are replaced for water damage more often than powertrain modules are replaced at all.
And water damage is the leading physical cause, because of where these modules live: behind a kick panel, under the dashboard, or beneath the passenger footwell carpet — the places a leaking screen seal, a blocked plenum drain or a wet-footed passenger delivers water to. A damp carpet on one side of the vehicle, with this code stored, is that until shown otherwise.
