The airbag warning light means the car's crash protection may not work correctly. Here the sensor is most likely at the back of the vehicle.
Rear crash protection is a real thing that few people know about. A rear-end shunt does not usually fire an airbag — it fires the seat belt pretensioners and, on many cars, the active head restraints, which throw the headrest forward to catch your head before your neck snaps back. Whiplash is the commonest serious injury in a rear-end crash, and that mechanism is what the car does about it.
One thing above all is worth mentioning: has a tow bar been fitted? Towing electrics are installed in exactly the area these sensors and their wiring live, and an installation that splices into the harness rather than using the proper vehicle-specific loom is a very common cause of this fault. If a tow bar has gone on within the last few months, start there.
Otherwise: mention any water in the boot floor, any reversing damage however slight, and any work that involved removing the rear trim or the boot lining.
Do not have the light cleared, and do not accept a resistor in place of a sensor.

Rear crash sensing exists, most people do not know it does, and what it protects against is worth stating.
A rear impact does not fire an airbag on most vehicles. It fires the belt pretensioners and, where fitted, the active head restraints — the mechanism that throws the headrest forward and upward to catch the head before the neck extends. Whiplash injury is the most common serious outcome of a rear-end collision, and that mechanism is the vehicle's answer to it. On some vehicles a rear impact also triggers the fuel cut and door unlock.
So a rear sensor reporting implausibly is not a lesser fault than a front one. It is the input for the protection that operates in the commonest kind of collision there is.
The rear of the vehicle has its own cause list, and one entry dominates. Towing electrics. A tow bar loom is fitted into the rear harness, often by splicing rather than through the vehicle's dedicated connector, and it is fitted in exactly the area these sensors and their wiring occupy. A rear restraints fault appearing within weeks of a tow bar being fitted is that installation until proven otherwise — and it is a job that should always be done with a proper vehicle-specific loom and coding, never by cutting into the harness.
After that: water in the boot floor and rear quarters, reversing damage, and the connectors behind the rear trim that come off for boot liners, load-space fittings and audio work.
