O que fazer

The car drives entirely normally. What has stopped working is the forward-looking sensor, so adaptive cruise control will not engage.

The safety point matters more than the convenience one: on most vehicles this same sensor feeds the automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning. A fault here can take those out too, and the dashboard does not always spell out which functions have gone. Until it is fixed, drive as though the car will not brake for you and will not warn you — because it may not.

Two things to check before paying for any diagnosis, in this order:

  • Is the sensor covered? Packed snow, ice, mud or a heavy film of road salt over the grille, badge or lower bumper blinds it completely, and the system correctly reports itself unavailable. Cleaning that area is free and resolves a large share of these. The same goes for anything fitted across the front — a number plate or its surround, a bull bar, extra lights, a replacement badge.
  • Has the front of the car been apart, or had even a light knock? A bumper, grille, radiator or condenser removed, an accident repair, or a parking bump that left no visible mark can all move the sensor's aim. It cannot be aligned by eye — it needs the proper calibration procedure with a target board on a level floor. Ask specifically whether that has been done; skipping it is a common reason the fault comes straight back after a repair.

A fault in the forward-looking sensor that measures the distance to the vehicle ahead — the centrally mounted one, on a vehicle that uses a single sensor rather than the left and right pair covered by P2591 and P2592.

This is the eye of adaptive cruise control, and on most vehicles it is the eye of the automatic emergency braking system as well. That second point is the one that matters and it is the reason this code is worth taking seriously on a car that drives perfectly: the same sensor usually feeds forward collision warning and autonomous braking, so a fault here can quietly remove the feature people most rely on without meaning to rely on it.

What it is is normally a radar unit behind the grille, the badge or the lower bumper, transmitting and listening for the reflection to work out how far away the vehicle ahead is and how fast the gap is closing. Some systems use a camera or a laser unit instead, and many fuse radar with a windscreen-mounted camera — which is why a windscreen replacement can produce assistance faults on a car whose radar is untouched.

The commonest reason this code appears is not a failure at all. The sensor looks through whatever is in front of it, so it is blinded by packed snow, ice, mud, a thick film of road salt, or heavy spray. A system reporting itself unavailable in those conditions is working correctly, and the remedy is to clean the sensor face rather than to diagnose anything. The same applies to things people fit: a number plate mounted across the sensor aperture, a plate surround, a bull bar, a light bar, a badge replaced with a metallic-painted aftermarket one, or a front-mounted accessory.

The second commonest is alignment, and this is where real money is lost. A radar aimed a fraction of a degree off is still a perfectly good radar — but a small angular error becomes a large lateral one at distance, so the system loses the car directly ahead, or finds one in the next lane. The sensor cannot be aimed by eye. It needs the manufacturer's calibration procedure: a level floor, a target board placed to a measured position, and a scan tool to run the routine.

That calibration is required after work most people would not connect to it — a bumper removed for any reason, a grille, a radiator, a condenser, an accident repair however minor, or the sensor bracket disturbed. A parking knock that leaves no visible mark can still move it enough to matter. A code appearing after any of that is an alignment question before it is a sensor question.
