Delayed engagement when selecting drive
A pause of a second or more between selecting drive or reverse and the transmission actually taking up, often ending with a clunk. Distinct from rough shifting between gears, and more informative: the transmission's pump is driven by the engine, so it makes least pressure at idle — which is exactly when this engagement happens. A delay that is worst on the first start of the day and improves once warm is the classic early sign of low pressure, whether from low fluid, a tiring pump or leakage past worn valve bores. What this usually means
This is more informative than rough shifting, and it appears earlier. The transmission's pump is driven by the engine, so it makes least pressure at idle — which is exactly when engagement happens. A pause of a second or more between selecting drive or reverse and the transmission taking up, often ending with a clunk, is the system telling you it is short of pressure at the worst moment it has.
Worst on the first start of the day and improving once warm is the classic early sign, and it has a specific mechanism: fluid drains back out of the circuit overnight past a seal or a check ball that no longer holds, so the first engagement has to fill a circuit that should already have been full. Everything is fine once it is full, which is why the complaint disappears after a few minutes and gets dismissed.
