The friction plate that couples engine to gearbox on a manual, automated manual or dual-clutch transmission — distinct from the multi-plate clutch packs inside a torque-converter automatic. It is a wearing part by design: every take-up from rest is deliberate, controlled slip, and the friction material thins accordingly. What changes as it wears is the bite point, which moves progressively towards the end of the pedal or actuator travel, and on an automated transmission that movement is tracked by an adaptation the module applies automatically. When that adaptation reaches its limit the module can no longer reach the position it needs, which is why a clutch nearing the end of its life announces itself as a control fault rather than as a slipping complaint.
