Was zu tun ist
Use the parking brake, every time, and do not rely on the transmission holding the car. The electronics cannot agree on what gear you have selected, so the car may not actually be in park even if the display says it is. On a slope, that matters.
Expect the car to refuse to change gear, or to sit in park or neutral and stay there. That is a deliberate safety response rather than a broken gearbox.
Say whether anything has been spilled into the centre console. The gear lever sits directly under the cup holders, and a drink into it is the commonest cause of this fault by a distance. Mentioning it saves both time and money.
Mention any recent work on the console, trim or wiring, including accessories fitted such as a dashcam or a phone charger, since a disturbed connector produces exactly this.

The sensors watching the gear lever do not agree with each other about where it is.
Why there is more than one sensor is the whole argument of this page. On a shift-by-wire vehicle the lever is connected to nothing. It is a switch, and the transmission moves because a module decided it should. Which means a lever misread is not an inconvenience — it is a car that selects drive when the driver asked for reverse, and there is no cable to overrule it.
So the lever carries redundant sensors, and they are deliberately not identical. Two or three elements, often positioned or magnetised so that their outputs move in opposite directions, are read together: at any real lever position the readings have a fixed relationship, and no single failure can imitate a valid combination. This code is that check failing.
The module's response is the safe one and it is why this reads as a serious fault: it stops trusting the lever. Typically the transmission stays where it is or falls back to park or neutral, the selection display shows dashes, and the vehicle refuses to change what it is doing until the disagreement clears.
The causes are unusually mundane for so safety-critical a component:
- Liquid into the console. The lever sits under the cup holders, and this is the classic. It often takes neighbouring switches with it, which is a useful clue.
- A connector disturbed, by console trim removal, an aftermarket accessory install, or a wiring loom that has been worked on.
- A magnet or sensor displaced by a knock, a worn detent, or something dropped into the mechanism.
- The module's own supply or earth, which shifts both readings but not equally.
A vehicle in this state should not be left on a slope relying on the transmission. If the electronics cannot agree on what the lever says, park may not be engaged even if the display says it is — use the parking brake and chock the wheels if there is any doubt.
