Was zu tun ist

Expect the engine to feel down on power, possibly with a reduced power warning. That flatness is deliberate. This sensor measures how fast the turbocharger is spinning, and without it the module has no way to know whether the turbo is approaching a speed that would destroy it — so it limits boost rather than risk it. The car is safe to drive gently to a workshop.

The fault is usually the wiring or the connector rather than the sensor. This circuit lives on a turbocharger that runs red hot under load, so heat-hardened insulation and chafed conductors are ordinary findings here, and a new sensor fitted to a damaged loom fails the same way.

If anyone quotes for a turbocharger on the strength of this code, ask what has been tested. This code is about a sensor circuit. It says nothing about the condition of the turbocharger itself.

A fault in the circuit of the sensor that reports how fast the turbocharger is actually spinning.

Most turbocharged vehicles have no such sensor, and understanding why some do explains everything else on this page.

A turbocharger shaft turns at speeds nothing else on the vehicle approaches — well over a hundred thousand revolutions per minute, and past two hundred thousand on small, high-output units. At those speeds the compressor wheel is close to the limit of what its own material can survive: the load trying to tear it apart rises with the square of the speed, so a modest overspeed is not a modest overload. Push a turbocharger far enough past its design speed and the compressor wheel bursts. That is not wear, it is failure in seconds, and the debris goes straight into the intake.

Most engines never need to measure this, because boost pressure is a good enough proxy and the turbo is sized with margin to spare. A speed sensor appears where that margin has been engineered away — on high-output diesels and downsized petrol engines running variable-geometry turbochargers close to their limits, where the module needs to know actual shaft speed rather than infer it. It is a protective instrument first and a control input second.

One naming trap worth settling immediately. A turbine speed sensor on an automatic transmission is a completely different part measuring a completely different thing — the speed of the torque converter's turbine, inside the gearbox. The words are similar enough that parts lookups and search results cross over constantly. This code is about the turbocharger, at the front of the engine, in the exhaust stream.

With the signal lost, the module protects the turbocharger the only way it can: by not letting it work hard. Boost is capped conservatively, so the engine feels flat. That is the safe response rather than a fault in itself, and the flatness is the symptom of the protection rather than of the sensor.
