This code does not say what is wrong. It only says the fuel additive module has found something and asked for the warning light, because it has no light of its own. The actual fault is stored in that module and needs a scan tool that can talk to it — not the basic reader that found this code.

What this system is, since most owners have never heard of it: on some diesels a catalytic additive is dosed from its own small tank into the fuel, to lower the temperature at which the particulate filter can burn off its soot. It is a consumable that runs out and needs refilling, roughly every 70,000 to 100,000 miles depending on the vehicle. It is not part of a normal service and is very often missed.

Why it is worth acting on promptly: if the additive has run out, the particulate filter stops regenerating properly. That is gradual and easy to ignore — slightly worse fuel consumption, regenerations happening more often — and it ends in a blocked filter, which is a large bill. Refilling the additive is a small one. This is a case where a cheap job now genuinely prevents an expensive one later.

Two things to insist on: ask for the additive module's own fault codes to be read rather than the engine being investigated, and if the tank is refilled, make sure the level counter is reset. The module counts rather than measures, so without the reset it still reads empty and the fault comes straight back — which usually gets blamed on the refill not working.

The fuel additive control module has asked the engine module to light the malfunction indicator lamp on its behalf.

This code describes no fault of its own — the fault it reports is stored in another module, exactly as at P0700 and P2561. A basic reader talks to the engine module, finds this, and the trail ends there. Reading what is actually wrong needs a scan tool that can address the additive module.

What that module does is worth knowing, because most owners of these vehicles have no idea the system exists and it costs them a great deal.

A diesel particulate filter traps soot and must periodically burn it off. Soot ignites at a temperature a diesel exhaust does not reliably reach on its own, so something has to bridge the gap. Most manufacturers do it by injecting extra fuel to raise exhaust temperature. Some instead dose a catalytic additive into the fuel itself — a cerium or iron compound held in its own small tank, metered into the fuel tank a few millilitres at a time whenever the vehicle is refuelled. It travels through combustion into the soot, and lowers the temperature at which that soot will burn. The regeneration then works at temperatures the exhaust actually reaches.

The critical property is that the additive is a consumable. It is in a tank, it is used up, and it has to be refilled — typically once in the region of every 70,000 to 100,000 miles depending on the vehicle. It is not part of a normal service, it is easy for both owner and workshop to be unaware of, and it is very commonly missed.

What happens when it runs out is the expensive part, and it is slow enough that nobody connects cause to effect. Without the additive, regeneration stops completing properly. Soot accumulates faster than it is burned. Over months the filter loads up, the vehicle starts attempting regenerations more often, fuel consumption climbs, and eventually the filter blocks — at which point the bill is a particulate filter, and sometimes an engine damaged by repeated fuel dilution of the oil from failed regeneration attempts. All of it caused by an inexpensive consumable that nobody refilled.

One procedural trap, on the same pattern as P0897 and P2563: the level counter must be reset after refilling. The module tracks consumption by counting rather than by measuring, so a tank refilled without the reset still reads empty, keeps reporting the fault, and may not resume dosing correctly. A refill that did not fix the code has very often simply not been reset.
