This is usually the car asking for a service item rather than reporting a breakdown. On some diesels a catalytic additive is dosed into the fuel from its own tank so the particulate filter can burn off soot properly, and that additive is a consumable. This warning most often means the tank is getting low and needs refilling — which is normal at the mileage it is due.
Act on it rather than living with it. It is inexpensive now. If the additive runs out completely, the particulate filter stops regenerating properly and gradually blocks, and that is a large bill — the full explanation is at P2584.
Two practical points: the detail is stored in the additive module, so it needs a scan tool that can read that module rather than a basic reader; and when the tank is refilled the level counter must be reset, or the warning stays on and looks as though the refill did not work.

The fuel additive control module has asked for a warning lamp to be displayed to the driver.
This is the companion to P2584 and the difference between them is worth understanding, because it changes what the driver is being told. P2584 is a request for the malfunction indicator lamp — the emissions warning light, which exists because something is wrong in a way that affects emissions compliance. This code is a request for a warning lamp in the ordinary sense: the module wants the driver informed.
In practice the message is very often "the additive tank needs refilling", and that is a service item rather than a fault. The system knows how much it has dosed and warns before it runs out, which is exactly what it should do. A vehicle showing this at around the mileage the additive is due is behaving correctly and asking for a refill. Treating it as a breakdown leads to parts being replaced; treating it as the routine consumable it is costs very little.
The reason to act rather than ignore it is set out in full at P2584: once the additive is genuinely gone, particulate filter regeneration stops completing and the filter loads up toward a far more expensive failure. This warning is the cheap end of that sequence, and it is the point at which acting is nearly free.
As with P2584, the specifics are stored in the additive module rather than in the engine module, so a basic code reader will show this code and nothing that explains it. And the same reset trap applies — refilling without resetting the counter leaves the warning in place.
