Que faire
The airbag warning light means the crash protection may not work properly. The car drives normally; get it seen.
There is one thing that will help more than anything else, and it needs a more specific question than the obvious one. "Has the car been in an accident?" almost always gets a truthful no. These are the questions that actually find the fault:
- Has the front or rear bumper ever been taken off, for any reason?
- Has a headlight, wing, radiator or grille been changed?
- Has a door been repaired or re-trimmed?
- Has a seat been out, or a carpet lifted or dried?
- Has a tow bar, dashcam, parking sensor kit or stereo been fitted?
None of those counts as an accident, all of them are routine, and every one puts somebody's hands on a crash sensor or its wiring. If you bought the car second-hand you may not know — say that too, because it tells the garage to look rather than ask.
Do not have the light cleared, and refuse a resistor fitted in place of a sensor.

A restraints system sensor is reporting a value that cannot be accepted as true. See U0471 for the family's framing and U0452 for the safety rules.
A practical note that applies to every code in this family and belongs somewhere in the middle of it, where a reader who has worked through several will find it: ask what the vehicle's repair history is, and ask it as a specific question rather than a general one.
"Has it been in an accident?" gets answered honestly and unhelpfully, because owners think of accidents as events involving other people and insurance. The question that finds these faults is narrower:
- Has the front or rear bumper ever been off?
- Has a headlight, wing, radiator or grille been replaced?
- Has a door been repaired, re-skinned or re-trimmed?
- Has a seat been removed, or the carpet lifted or dried?
- Has a tow bar, dashcam, parking sensor kit or audio installation been fitted?
Each of those is routine, none of them registers as "an accident", and every one of them puts hands on a restraints sensor or its wiring. A second-hand vehicle's history is usually unknown to its owner, which is why the physical inspection matters more here than the interview.
And where the answer is genuinely nothing, the remaining causes are ordinary and short: a connector that has corroded, a harness chafed against structure, water reaching a sensor whose seal has aged, or — least likely — the sensor itself.
