This one can stop the car from starting, so it is worth understanding.
Your car has an electronic lock that holds the steering column when it is switched off. If it cannot confirm it has released, the car will not let you drive — usually with a steering-lock message and an engine that will not crank.
If that happens, try this before calling anyone: turn the steering wheel firmly left and right while pressing the start button. The bolt often binds because the wheels are parked hard against a kerb, and relieving that pressure frees it.
If it works, take the hint — park with the wheels straight, and get it looked at rather than relying on the trick. Ask whether your car has a recall or extended warranty for the column lock, quoting your registration; several manufacturers had known problems here and covered them well beyond the normal warranty.

This is a security device, and it is the one module in this range that can leave a car undriveable — so it deserves reading before it fails rather than after.
An electronic steering column lock replaces the mechanical lock a key used to operate. On a car with push-button start there is no key barrel, so a motorised bolt engages the column when the car is switched off and withdraws it when the car authenticates the driver. It must report its position truthfully, because the car will not allow drive with the column possibly locked.
So the failure that matters is the lock that will not release, and it strands the vehicle exactly where it is parked — usually with a message about the steering lock and an engine that will not start. This is one of the few comfort-adjacent modules whose failure ends a journey before it begins.
Two causes dominate. The mechanism itself jams, particularly if the wheel is under load — parked with the wheels turned hard against a kerb puts the bolt under pressure and it can bind. And the module's own electronics fail, which on several manufacturers became common enough to attract extended warranties and recalls worth asking about by registration number.
Relieving pressure on the lock is the one thing a driver can usefully try: turn the steering wheel firmly left and right while pressing the start button. If it frees, park with the wheels straight from then on and get it looked at rather than relying on the trick.
