Ask whether the engine is using oil or coolant. A slow oxygen sensor is usually just an aged one, but contamination from burning oil or coolant produces the same fault far sooner — and a new sensor fitted to a contaminated exhaust fails again, so it is worth establishing which situation this is.

Mention any recent engine work where sealant was used. Non-approved silicone sealant releases vapour that poisons oxygen sensors, and it is a known cause of premature failure.

Expect it to matter mainly at MOT time. This sensor monitors the catalytic converter rather than controlling the engine, so the car will usually drive normally while failing its emissions readiness checks.

Allow time before the MOT for the repair and for the car's self-checks to complete afterwards.

Wat deze code betekent

The downstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 is taking too long to swing from rich to lean.

Slow response and delayed response are different measurements, and this family contains both — so the distinction is worth settling once. Slow response is about the rate of the transition: the sensor starts moving when it should, and takes too long to get there. Delayed response is about dead time: the sensor does not begin moving until well after the mixture has changed.

Slow is ageing. Delayed is usually something in the way.

This code is the slow kind, on a sensor after the catalytic converter. That position matters: the downstream sensor is not there to trim fuelling — the upstream sensor does that — it is there to judge the catalytic converter. A lazy downstream sensor therefore makes the converter's assessment unreliable, and the practical consequence is that catalyst efficiency monitoring cannot complete.

Ageing is the dominant cause and it is honest wear. These sensors live at several hundred degrees in a corrosive gas stream, and their response slows gradually over tens of thousands of miles. A slow-response code on a sensor at high mileage is usually exactly what it says.

Before accepting that, rule out contamination, which produces the same symptom much earlier in a sensor's life: coolant from a failing head gasket, oil from worn guides, or silicone from a non-approved sealant used during a repair. Contamination that killed one sensor will kill its replacement.
