P0897: Óleo da transmissão deteriorado
O que fazer
Have the fluid and filter changed, and make sure the fluid life counter is reset as part of the job — if it is not, this code comes back on perfectly good new fluid and it looks like the service failed. Ask for confirmation that the reset was done. If the vehicle tows or works hard, mention it, since the fluid may be worse than the counter suggests.
O que este código significa
The vehicle has concluded that its transmission fluid is worn out. After a hundred codes in which fluid condition has been the first thing to check, this is the transmission finally saying it itself.
How it knows matters, because it does not actually test the fluid. There is no sensor that measures oxidation or spent friction modifiers. What the module does is integrate temperature over time — counting hours at each temperature band, weighting hot hours far more heavily than warm ones, because heat is what destroys transmission fluid. The result is a model of fluid life, not a measurement of it, and models can be wrong in both directions.
Understated: a vehicle used for towing, or one that has spent a summer in traffic with a partly blocked cooler, may have genuinely cooked its fluid faster than the counter believes.
Overstated, and this is the common one: the counter must be reset when the fluid is changed. It is a scan tool operation, it is easy to skip, and skipping it means the code returns on brand-new fluid. Anyone told they need a second fluid change shortly after the first should ask whether the counter was reset rather than paying twice.
