O que fazer
Use the parking brake firmly every time you stop, and do not rely on the gear display.
On your car the lever is not mechanically connected to the gearbox — it sends a request. This code means the computer reading your lever and the computer running the gearbox are running software that does not agree about what each position means. Nothing is broken; they were never meant to work together.
Most likely the car will simply refuse to move out of park, or refuse to select a gear. That is the safe outcome and it is the one to hope for.
The one to guard against is the car showing a gear it is not actually in. If the car rolls at all when you take your foot off the brake, it is not in park regardless of what the display says — so use the parking brake, and avoid slopes until this is sorted.
Mention any module that has been replaced, especially a second-hand one, and any gearbox work. That is nearly always the cause: what each lever position means is defined in software, and it changes quietly between model years while the plug and the part number stay identical.
This needs programming rather than parts, and normally a dealer or specialist with the manufacturer's data.

A module is running software that does not belong with the gear shift control module's. See U0300 for the family and U0404 for what a shift-by-wire selector is.
This one is worth a higher severity than most of the family, because the value in dispute is which gear the driver has asked for — and on a shift-by-wire vehicle that request is the only link between the lever and the gearbox.
A selector reports a position; the gearbox module interprets it. What each position means — which detent is neutral, how many positions exist, whether there is a manual gate, what a rotary control's angles map to — is defined in software at both ends. Two modules disagreeing about that mapping is not an abstract configuration problem.
The vehicle's correct response is to refuse to act on a request it cannot interpret, which usually means it will not leave park, or will not select a gear at all. That is safe and it is the outcome to hope for.
The outcome to guard against is a display that disagrees with what is engaged, and it is the reason the U0404 instruction is repeated here without softening: apply the parking brake deliberately every time, and do not trust the gear display. If the vehicle rolls when the brake pedal is released, it is not in park whatever the dashboard says.
Where this comes from is nearly always identifiable. A selector module or a gearbox module replaced — particularly second-hand from a different model year — is the classic route, because the position mapping is exactly the kind of thing that changes quietly between versions while the connector and the part number do not.
Vehicles fitted with a different transmission variant during repair are the other, and that is a configuration question rather than a mechanical one.
