The important thing: the car will probably keep running now but may refuse to start after you switch it off. Do not park somewhere awkward — deal with it while the vehicle is still going, or leave it somewhere a recovery truck can get to.
One reassurance: this will not lock the steering while you are driving. These systems are specifically designed so the lock cannot engage above walking pace and generally only when the car is shut down.
Before assuming the worst, try this — it fixes a great many "steering lock" no-starts and costs nothing. If the wheels are turned against a kerb, the steering lock is under tension and the bolt binds. Rock the steering wheel gently left and right while pressing the start button. If it releases, nothing was ever broken.
If it is a real fault, ask whether the steering column control module is also reporting problems. Both together usually means a shared power supply or a connector at the column rather than two failed modules — a much smaller repair.

This is the code in the block most likely to strand a vehicle, and the reason is worth understanding before deciding when to deal with it.
An electric column lock replaced the mechanical key barrel on keyless vehicles. It is a bolt that engages the steering column when the vehicle is shut down and must be commanded to withdraw before it will start. The command travels over the network — so a module that cannot be heard cannot be told to unlock.
The practical shape of that is specific and worth stating: the vehicle you are driving now will probably continue to run, and may refuse to start once switched off. That asymmetry is the whole practical content of this page. Do not park it somewhere awkward. Get it looked at while it is still going, or leave it somewhere a recovery truck can reach easily.
The opposite failure exists and is more serious. A lock that engages while the vehicle is moving would be extremely dangerous, and the systems are designed with interlocks specifically to prevent it — engagement is inhibited above a very low road speed and generally requires the vehicle to be shut down. It is not a realistic outcome of this code, and saying so is worth more than leaving somebody to worry about it.
Diagnostically, the first question is whether the column lock module alone is silent or the column control module too. Both together points at a shared supply or the column's connector rather than at either module — and the clockspring reasoning at U0212 applies to anything in that area.
One genuinely common non-fault: many vehicles will not release the lock unless the steering wheel is unloaded. A wheel left under tension against a kerb binds the bolt, and the car refuses to start with a message about the steering lock. Rocking the wheel gently while pressing the start button is the standard remedy and resolves a large share of these complaints without any fault existing at all.
