U0429: Ongeldige gegevens ontvangen van de regelmodule stuurkolom
Wat te doen
If your car has an electric steering lock, the practical risk is that it runs now and refuses to start after you switch off. Do not park it somewhere awkward — deal with it while it is still going.
Expect some combination of indicators, wipers, horn and steering wheel controls misbehaving, with stability control off. Indicators or wipers not working make the car unroadworthy, so it should not be driven far like that.
Two things worth reporting. Does anything change as you turn the wheel? That points at the coiled cable behind the steering wheel — a known wear item that classically takes the horn and wheel buttons with it. And has any work been done involving the airbag, steering wheel or column? Those connectors are hidden behind the wheel and easily left unmated.
If a steering angle fault is also stored, that is very likely the same problem rather than two — the steering angle signal usually reaches the car through this module. Worth saying, so it is not investigated twice.
Wat deze code betekent
The steering column control module is broadcasting data that cannot be accepted as true. See U0400 for the family's framing and U0212 for what this module does.
The column module gathers everything that happens at the top of the steering column — the stalk switches, the horn, the wheel controls, the steering angle signal on many vehicles, and on some the electric column lock. So its published data covers several unrelated systems, and an implausible report affects all of them.
The relationship with U0428 is worth making explicit, because the two codes very often appear together and are usually one fault. Where the steering angle signal reaches the network through the column module, a column module publishing bad data and a steering angle sensor publishing bad data are the same event seen from two places. Treating them as two problems doubles the work for nothing.
The clockspring is the first physical suspect, as it is throughout this area, and the corpus's description of it as a consumable applies: a coiled ribbon that has cracked after hundreds of thousands of steering cycles. The signature is free to check — the fault changes with steering wheel position — and the classic accompanying evidence is a horn or wheel buttons that have stopped working.
The consequences worth predicting are the U0212 ones: indicators and wipers possibly unresponsive, which is a roadworthiness matter; stability control and driver assistance unavailable; and on vehicles with an electric column lock, a car that runs now and may refuse to start once switched off. That last one determines where the vehicle should be parked, which is the most actionable thing on the page.
