O que fazer

The airbag warning light means the crash protection may not work properly.

This one usually comes down to a plug rather than a sensor, and there is one thing worth insisting on when it is found.

These connectors are sealed with a rubber gasket and a locking clip, and both harden with age. Once the seal goes, moisture gets in and the pins corrode — green or bluish deposit on the metal, or a white powdery bloom. The circuit these sensors run on is extremely sensitive to that.

If a corroded connector is found, ask for it to be replaced rather than cleaned up. Cleaning it works for a while — long enough for the light to go out and the car to be handed back — and then it comes back, because the seal that let the water in is still not sealing. On most circuits cleaning is a fair economy; on an airbag circuit it is not.

Two things worth mentioning if they apply. Has the engine bay or the underside been pressure washed? That drives water past a tired seal in a way rain does not. And has the car stood unused for months? A car that is driven regularly warms its connectors and dries them out; one that sits does not.

Do not have the light cleared, and refuse a resistor in place of a sensor.

O que este código significa

A restraints system sensor has stopped being heard from. See U0170 for the one-versus-several rule; U0477 covers the mounting, which matters when a sensor reads wrongly — this page is about the connector, which is what matters when one goes quiet.

A crash sensor connector at the front or underside of a vehicle is sealed with a moulded gasket and a positive lock, and both age. The gasket hardens with heat cycling and stops sealing; the lock's plastic becomes brittle and stops holding the halves fully together. Neither shows from outside.

What follows is corrosion, and it has a recognisable appearance worth describing because it is diagnostic. Green or blue-green deposit on copper alloy pins, or a white powdery bloom on tinned ones. Either means moisture has been present for a long time, and a circuit that measures in the tens of milliohms cannot tolerate it.

The instruction that follows is firmer than it would be anywhere else on the vehicle: a corroded restraints connector is replaced, not cleaned. Cleaning restores continuity for a while — long enough for the lamp to go out and the vehicle to be handed back — and the corrosion resumes from where it was left, because the seal that let the water in is still not sealing. On any other circuit that is a defensible economy. On this one it is not.

Two contributory causes are worth naming because both are ordinary and neither is anyone's fault. Pressure washing an engine bay or a wheel arch drives water past a tired gasket in a way rain never does. And a vehicle that has stood unused for months loses the mild warming that normally drives moisture back out of a connector.
