Treat the airbag warning light as meaning the airbags may not go off in a crash, or may not go off correctly. The car drives normally, which is exactly why this gets postponed. It should not be.

Nothing is broken, and that is what makes this one worth explaining.

The airbag computer's software is not a general programme applied to whatever it finds. It is a description of your particular car's restraints — which airbags you have, where each crash sensor is and what it should read in an impact, whether there are belt pretensioners at every seat, and the thresholds that decide what fires, how hard, and in what order. All of it is specific to your body shell, your market and your specification.

So a mismatch here is not a system that does nothing. It is a system that might act on decisions written for a different car — at the one moment there is no margin at all. Taking the airbags out of service is the correct response.

Three things to insist on.

Do not accept a second-hand airbag module. It arrives describing another car — and if it came from a car where anything deployed, it is permanently locked and cannot be used at all.

If the car has had accident repair, say so. A module reprogrammed from the wrong build data is exactly how this happens.

And insist that it is coded from your car's own build record, not from a generic file. A module configured approximately is worse than one not configured at all, because it will act.

As always on this system: do not have the light simply cleared, and refuse any offer to fit a resistor in place of a component.

A module is running software that does not belong with the restraints control module's. See U0300 for the family, U0151 for the restraints system's rules, and U0178 for the configuration argument, which reaches its sharpest form here.

A restraints module's software is not a strategy applied to whatever hardware it finds. It is a description of this vehicle's restraints and how they should behave in a crash — which airbags exist, where each crash sensor is and what it should read in an impact, whether there are pretensioners at every seat, whether the vehicle has pedestrian protection or rollover sensing, and the thresholds and staging that decide what fires, how hard, and in what order.

All of that is specific to the body shell, the market and the specification. The same module part number covers vehicles whose restraints differ substantially.

So the failure this code prevents is the one that matters: deployment decisions made for a different vehicle. Not a system that does nothing — a system that acts, on thresholds written for a different structure, at the one moment there is no margin.

Which is why the vehicle takes the restraints out of service and lights the lamp, and why an airbag lamp with this code stored should be read as: the airbags may not fire, or may not fire correctly.

The routes in are short and every one is avoidable.

  • A second-hand restraints module, which arrives describing the donor vehicle. And U0452's warning compounds it: a module from a vehicle where anything deployed is permanently locked and cannot be used at all.
  • A module reprogrammed after accident repair from the wrong build data, which is the failure a body shop is most likely to produce.
  • A module coded from a generic file rather than from this vehicle's own record.

The fix is this vehicle's build data, written from the manufacturer's record against its identification number, and nothing else will do. A restraints module configured approximately is worse than one configured not at all, because it will act.

And U0151's rules do not soften for a configuration fault: nothing on this system is touched with the battery connected, and a resistor substituted for a component is never a repair.
