O que fazer
Expect equipment on the specialist or converted part of the vehicle to have stopped working — body equipment, a tail-lift, habitation systems, tracking or tachograph functions — rather than anything to do with driving.
Five of these translator modules effectively means a converted or commercial vehicle, where a converter has added networks the original manufacturer did not fit. That is also where the fault usually is: at the join between the factory wiring and the added wiring. Whoever did the conversion is often better placed to fix it than a general workshop, and worth contacting first.
On an ordinary car, this code most likely means the car has been told it has equipment it does not have — which happens after a second-hand module is fitted. Correcting the coding is the fix, and there is no fault to find.
The vehicle is normally safe to drive. Do not use any affected body equipment, trailer or lifting gear until it has been checked.

A further gateway module is broadcasting data that cannot be accepted as true. See U0447 for what a gateway does, U0448 for why a vehicle carries more than one, and U0449 for where three or more are ordinary.
One numbering note first, because it will otherwise look like an omission. The standard's gateway D sits in the letter-suffixed part of the U044x range rather than at a decimal number, so the sequence readable here runs A, B, C and then E. A scan tool reporting a gateway D fault is not reporting something this page covers.
A fifth gateway means a vehicle with an unusual number of separate networks, and in practice that means a large commercial or specialist vehicle rather than a car: a chassis with a body-builder interface, a bus with a passenger-systems network, a motorhome with a habitation network, a vehicle with auxiliary hydraulics or a tail-lift, or one carrying fleet and tachograph equipment on its own bus.
So the two questions from U0449 apply with more force here. Is the module fitted at all — a configuration claim about equipment the vehicle does not have produces this code with nothing to find — and if it is, what changed? These networks are almost always the work of a converter rather than the vehicle manufacturer, and the boundary between factory wiring and converted wiring is where these faults live.
