O que fazer
The car drives normally. The buttons, dial or touchpad may be unresponsive, may act on their own, or may work intermittently.
Has anything ever been spilled on them? A drink into a console controller is the single most common cause here, and it is worth saying even if it was months ago — the corrosion takes a while to show.
If the controls seem to act by themselves, or the car's battery goes flat when it stands, mention both. A control stuck reporting itself pressed keeps the car awake, and that is the version of this fault that leaves you with a dead battery on Monday morning.
Often the repair is the switch pack rather than the module underneath it, which is a considerably cheaper part — worth asking about before agreeing to anything larger.

The letter narrows the fault to one instance of a repeated module, and that is genuinely useful — but it does not say which one physically. The mapping from letter to position is the manufacturer's choice and differs between makes, so only the vehicle's own documentation resolves it.
Two consequences. Several letters stored together means the fault is upstream of all of them — a shared supply, a shared earth, or the bus. Exactly one letter stored is the more informative case: the others are working, so everything they share is proven good.
This is the physical controls rather than the screen: the rotary controller, the button cluster, the touchpad, the panel of switches beside or below the display.
Two modules in this family usually means controls in two places — a console controller and a dashboard panel, or a front set and a rear one — so a fault on one letter with the other working localises it immediately.
These are the most-touched surfaces in the car, and they fail accordingly. Spilled drinks are the classic: a sticky rotary controller and a stored controls-interface code are frequently one event, and the module underneath is often fine once the switch pack is dealt with. Worn contacts, a cracked ribbon behind a button panel, and a touchpad delaminating from heat are the others.
The failure mode worth knowing is the stuck input. A control reporting itself pressed when it is not produces data the receiving module rejects — and can also keep the car awake, because a vehicle that thinks somebody is pressing buttons does not go to sleep.
