Head-Up Display

Projects speed, navigation instructions, cruise settings and warnings into the driver's forward view so that they need not look down. It measures nothing — every figure on it arrives from another module over the bus.

That placement is what makes a wrong reading here worse than the same error on the dashboard, because a number superimposed on the road is read continuously and checked against nothing. A frozen or incorrect speed on a head-up display is believed in a way a dial reading would not be. Where the projection is questionable, the dial is the instrument to trust, and switching the display off is better than leaving a wrong figure in the driver's eyeline.

One complaint is regularly misattributed to the electronics. A doubled, ghosted or blurred image is the windscreen: these vehicles need glass with a wedge-shaped interlayer so the two reflections coincide, and a replacement screen of the wrong specification produces exactly that ghosting with no fault code at all.

Also known as: hud, head up display, heads up display, windscreen display, windshield projection, projected display

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
